I am writing a story without an outline.
That means I am floating on the ocean, without a map. And sometimes it gets stormy. Words toss and splash around me—familiar words, that used to make sense. Now they look strange and unfriendly.
Oh look! There’s a lighthouse. It’s an exerpt of my story. These words nod to the tossing, unfriendly words, but they don’t stop to listen. Powered by some thematic light, they shine through the storm of my story, showing me the way. These words, this lighthouse, will be my guide.
I hear music now, as I write. It is a loud music, and many instruments play at once. Yet still I can hear a melody. It is muffled, but distinct. Oh! Now it’s gone. The sound of dozens of other instruments swells in my head. I take out my earbuds for a minute. The silence is peaceful, but the melody haunts me. I put my earbuds back in. There it is! Louder this time, and weaving into the other sounds with layers I hadn’t imagined before. This theme, this melody, will be my guide.
